Case study: Herstmonceux Castle

Overview and Requirements

Herstmonceux Castle is a historic 15th century moated brick castle in East Sussex, set within 300 acres of parkland and gardens. It is a significant example of early brick architecture and now houses the Bader International Study Centre for Queen’s University.

The Castle required a modern addressable fire alarm system. As a listed historic building, there were strict controls on where devices could be located and how cabling could be installed to support the wireless receivers for the detection system.

Key considerations

This project needed a solution that achieved modern fire safety expectations while protecting the historic fabric of the building. Equipment positioning and installation methods had to be carefully planned to work within heritage restrictions, with minimal disruption to sensitive architectural features.

Solution

ECS Systems delivered a fully compliant LD2 fire detection system designed and installed in accordance with BS 5839-1. The solution met regulatory requirements while remaining within the parameters set out by Heritage UK.

A Hyfire wireless fire detection system was specified to reduce the need for intrusive cabling and extensive containment.

Delivery

ECS began with a detailed site survey to determine the most appropriate system layout for the building and its constraints. Wireless signal mapping was undertaken to confirm reliable communication paths between devices, translators and expanders, ensuring system resilience without invasive wiring.

Installation was completed with careful consideration of the building’s listed status and structural limitations.

Outcome

The wireless fire alarm system provides an effective solution for a listed historic building where preserving original fabric is critical. By removing the need for intrusive cabling through walls, ceilings and decorative finishes, the system supports compliance while helping protect heritage features. Compact, discreet equipment also allows devices to be positioned sympathetically within the interior while still delivering the required coverage.

“ECS were fantastic from the initial site visit dealing with Heritage UK and the planning consent. Their engineers were first class throughout. Their aftercare has been exemplary.”
